What is a beard transplant?
Beard transplant is one of the most under-served procedures in Marathwada. Most local clinics treat it as an add-on; we treat it as a specialty. Dr. Raktade’s maxillofacial-surgery training in facial anatomy is particularly relevant here — beard angles change every few millimetres across the face.
Who is a good candidate?
- Genetic patchy beard — adult men aged 22+ with naturally sparse coverage in cheeks, jawline, or moustache
- Scar revision — acne scarring, surgical scars, burn scars on the beard zone
- Trauma reconstruction — post-injury beard restoration
- Gender-affirming care — beard density for transgender men (post-testosterone therapy)
- Cleft lip repair — scar coverage on the upper lip / moustache zone

Procedure day
- Beard design. Dr. Raktade marks the desired beard outline with a fine pen. You see and approve before any incision.
- Donor harvest. 0.7–0.9 mm FUE punch on the back of the scalp. 800–1,800 grafts depending on goal.
- Recipient channels. Sharp acute-angle slits in the beard zone — angle decreases from 45° at the chin to 20° at the upper cheek for natural-looking direction.
- Implantation. 1-hair grafts at the moustache border, 1-2-hair grafts elsewhere for natural density variation.
- Post-op. Cold compress, post-op kit, written aftercare. Home the same day.
Recovery — beard-specific
- Day 1–3: Mild swelling around chin and upper cheek. Cold compress.
- Day 4–7: Tiny crusts visible. Gentle saline rinse only.
- Day 7–10: Crusts shed. Beard zone looks pink/normal.
- Day 14: Shaving allowed (use single-blade or electric trimmer for the first month).
- Month 2–3: Shock-loss phase — transplanted hair sheds. This is normal and expected.
- Month 4–6: New growth begins.
- Month 8–12: Final result with full natural density.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the transplanted beard hair permanent?
- Yes. The transplanted follicles come from the genetically DHT-resistant donor zone of the scalp and remain permanent. They will grow, can be shaved, and respond to trimming and styling like normal beard hair.
- Will I need to shave my head for beard transplant?
- No — only the donor area at the back of the scalp is trimmed to ~1 mm. The trimmed area is naturally hidden by the surrounding hair. You can wear normal hairstyles within a week.
- Can I shape and style the new beard?
- Yes. After 14 days you can shave normally. After month 6 you can apply beard oils, balms, and styling products. The transplanted hair is your hair — it adapts.
- How long until I can grow a full beard?
- Initial growth begins month 3–4. Density builds through months 4–8. Final result with full beard density at 8–12 months.
- Will it look natural?
- Yes — when designed by a surgeon with facial anatomy training. Beard angles change every few millimetres; getting them right is the difference between natural and obviously-transplanted. This is where Dr. Raktade’s maxillofacial training matters.
- Does it work for cleft lip scar coverage?
- Yes. Beard transplant is one of the best options for cleft lip moustache restoration. Typically 200–500 grafts depending on scar size.
- Is it suitable for transgender care?
- Yes. We offer private gender-affirming beard procedures. Please WhatsApp the clinic for a discreet consultation. Pre-op testosterone therapy needs to be stable for at least 12 months.
- How painful is beard transplant recovery?
- Mild discomfort for 2–3 days, similar to a minor sunburn. Manageable with paracetamol. Most patients return to office work within 7 days.
- Will my donor area look thinner?
- No. With 0.7 mm punches and proper extraction pattern, donor density loss is under 10% — visually undetectable. Donor follicles regrow trimmed hair within 2 weeks.
- Can I combine beard transplant with scalp transplant?
- Yes — many patients do both in two separate sessions, 6–12 months apart. Doing both in one mega-session is possible but rarely recommended.
